Safety Crisis: Suzuki Fronx Hits One-Star Rating After Shocking Seatbelt Failure
By Lions Roar News Consumer Safety Desk
WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND – Owners of the newly launched Suzuki Fronx are being urged to immediately stop carrying passengers in the rear seats following a “rare and serious” safety failure. The vehicle, which debuted in New Zealand in June, has been slapped with a devastating one-star safety rating by the Australasian New Car Assessment Programme (ANCAP).
The warning comes after a rear seatbelt mechanism failed during a high-speed laboratory crash test, causing a dummy to become completely unrestrained and strike the interior of the car with lethal force.
? The Failure: What Went Wrong?
During ANCAP’s “full-width frontal test”—which simulates a 50km/h head-on collision—the rear passenger seatbelt retractor failed. Instead of locking and holding the passenger in place, the mechanism released, allowing the belt to spool out uncontrollably.
The Official Findings:
- Unrestrained Occupant: The crash test dummy was flung forward, striking the rear of the front seat.
- Extreme Injury Risk: ANCAP recorded “excessive chest loads” and “high head acceleration,” which in a real-world crash could result in fatal injuries.
- Child Safety Concerns: The vehicle also performed poorly in child occupant protection, scoring just 40%, with child dummies recording dangerous levels of neck tension.
“The seatbelt component failure is rare and serious,” said ANCAP CEO Carla Hoorweg. “Our view is that adult and child passengers should not travel in the rear seats of the Suzuki Fronx until the reason for the failure has been determined and rectified.”
? National Response: Sales Halted
There are currently 1,115 Suzuki Fronx vehicles registered on New Zealand roads. Following the report, both the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) and Suzuki NZ have taken swift action:
- Sales Suspended: Suzuki NZ has officially stopped all sales of the Fronx across the country.
- Voluntary Recall: Suzuki has launched an immediate voluntary safety recall for a specific range of VINs.
- Owner Contact: The company is contacting all registered owners starting today to provide safety instructions.
- Loan Vehicles: Reports indicate Suzuki is offering alternative transport solutions for affected customers who require the use of rear seats for upcoming holiday travel.
? The “One-Star” Reality
While the seatbelt failure is the most alarming headline, ANCAP noted that the one-star rating reflects overall poor performance. Even before the seatbelt broke, the Fronx had already lost significant points for its structural integrity and lack of advanced safety assist features.
| Category | Score | Result |
| Adult Occupant Protection | 48% | ? One-Star Territory |
| Child Occupant Protection | 40% | ? One-Star Territory |
| Vulnerable Road User | 65% | ? Four-Star Band |
| Safety Assist | 55% | ? Three-Star Band |
