TAURANGA, NEW ZEALAND (Sunday, February 1, 2026) — Motorists in the Western Bay of Plenty are being urged to avoid Welcome Bay Road today after a “tomo” (sinkhole) opened up on the approach to the Waitao Bridge.

The Western Bay of Plenty District Council (WBOPDC) responded to the scene at approximately 8:50 AM this morning following a report from a vigilant member of the public.

? The Situation: Structural Safety vs. Road Surface

Aidan Glynn, the Council’s road maintenance team lead, confirmed that while the road surface has dropped significantly, the bridge itself remains structurally sound.

  • The Damage: A small but deep tomo formed on the road approach where the pavement meets the bridge over the Waitao Stream.
  • The Cause: While a formal analysis is underway, the area was recently heavily impacted by flooding during the January 21-22 storms—the same weather event that caused tragic landslides in nearby Tauranga.
  • The Repair: Crews are currently on-site excavating the hole to find the root cause and reinstate the pavement.

? Detours and Diversions

The road is currently closed at the bridge, with several diversions in place to manage the Sunday traffic flow.

  • Diversion Points: Signage and barriers are located at the Te Puke Highway end of Welcome Bay Road and near Waikite Road.
  • Estimated Reopening: Repairs are expected to be completed late this afternoon, provided weather conditions remain stable.
  • Travel Tip: Drivers are advised to use the Te Puke Highway as an alternative route and allow at least 15 minutes of extra travel time.

“For safety, please avoid the area and respect traffic management,” said Glynn. “Detours will remain until the site is inspected and confirmed 100% safe for heavy vehicles.”

? What to Watch For

Council is asking locals to be their “eyes on the ground” as the region recovers from recent heavy rains. If you see any of the following, report it immediately to 0800 926 732:

  1. Sudden depressions (dips in the road).
  2. Edge breaks (crumbling road shoulders).
  3. Ponding (water sitting where it shouldn’t).
